TetraMap

TetraMap is a personality assessment that originated in New Zealand. It’s a terrific, very powerful tool to help individuals better understand themselves and understand how to work better with others. It is a helpful insight into what makes people tick.

At the heart of TetraMap and its success is the use of nature as a metaphor. It maps nature into four  basic elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire and then uses the metaphor of nature to look at human behaviour.

Earth – focuses on achievement of goals

Air – focuses on systems

Water – focuses on well being and caring

Fire – inspires and excites us

What’s great about TetraMap is it’s simplicity and it’s depth of clarity it brings to understanding differences in human behaviour.

When Jon and Yoshi Brett developed TetraMap they were influenced by the work of Buckminster Fuller. ‘Bucky’ was best known for his geodesic dome design (think Eden project). Using the geodesic design or tetrahedron, Jon and Yoshi were able to map the four elements. The brilliance of this is that it highlights how all of the elements are inter-connected, that there are no opposites and it demonstrates how nature works in synergy.

Using TetraMap to describe Human Behaviour

Each of the elements is used to describe different human characteristics. All of us have the four elements – just in varying degrees. By understanding the differences, we can significantly improve our communication and therefore our relationships and our results.

Here’s an overview of what each individual element stands for:

Earth – like to take action, are decisive facts driven and goal oriented

Air – like clarity, are logical, orderly and focus on improvement

Water – like to focus on relationships, are considerate, caring and supportive

Fire – like possibilities, thinking of the future, leaving a legacy and making a positive difference.

Typically we have a blend of two of the elements that are our drivers / our key preferences for the way we behave. Remember that we need a blend of all the elements across our teams.
